I remember the meeting that Ken and I had with Ryan to determine which Fires of Outland cards we wanted to spoil for the web previews. We covered all the basic angles: cards for the tournament players, cards for the MMO players, funny cards, powerful cards, cards that you could build a deck around, and tech cards that would shake up the metagame.
After we finalized the list and the order they would appear, Ryan asked me which articles I wanted to write. I asked him to read me back the list and when he got to Stellaris, I stopped him. ¡°Definitely put me down for that one,¡± I said. At the time, the decision was a no-brainer for me. Over the several months of development that we worked on Outland, I couldn¡¯t immediately think of another card that I saw more often in the developers¡¯ decks. It was a home run in my mind. How much work would I have to put into writing an article designed to promote a card that sold itself?
If you read my last article, you can see I was thinking the same thing when I chose Earth Shock. That choice was a little different, however. People already had some idea of what Earth Shock should be doing. With Stellaris, however, the only real expectations involved some random combination of cost, ATK, and swing values with a potentially cool text box.
It wasn¡¯t until after I finished my Earth Shock article and started on this one that I began to suspect I might have chosen poorly. With a high-cost splashy card or build-around combo card, there¡¯s so much to write about. But with powerful, straightforward cards like Stellaris, you have to work a lot harder to deliver a meaningful message beyond, ¡°Man, this card sure is good.¡±
